Economic Justice

From the 18th General Chapter of the Sisters of Mary Reparatrix, 1977, it states: "...In the spirit of the Beatitudes, we will make our own the violence of the peacemaker by contesting unjust structures, whether they be political, economic, social, even sometimes religious." (3,4).

The teachings of the major religions of the world all support the right of all peoples to become the principal architects of their own economic and social development.

"we cannot support a retreat in the fight against poverty and economic injustice. There is still too much poverty and not enough economic opportunity for all our people." U.S. Bishops Conference

In our world, the richest fifth receives 82.7% of total world income while the poorest fifth receives 1.4% of total world income. UN Development Programme.

What is especially alarming is that there is widespread agreement that, as bad as these 2008-based statistics are, they have grown far worse in 2009 due to the economic downturn..."
