Remembering Sr. Pat Mullen

September 4, 1935 – December 11, 2024

We read in the letter to the Corinthians “God loves a cheerful giver.” Those words could be used to describe the life of Pat Mullen as well as her philosophy. Her Irish wit gave her a unique sense of humor and Pat appreciated cheerfulness and good humor in people and did her best to live it and share joy with others.

Another quote that could describe Pat is the often-repeated words of Julian of Norwich. “All shall be well, and all shall be well…” Pat had unbounded confidence in the providence of God which came, no doubt, from her deep faith. She pleaded for simplicity – God will take care of it, she often said - and in her mind there was no need for long meetings to plan for the future.

Pat was born in New York to Mary and Patrick Mullen, both of whom had been born in Ireland. From what Pat shared; we know that she had a wonderful relationship with both of her parents. She loved her mother dearly and was ever so proud of her father, a New York City policeman. Pat was one of seven, having four brothers and two sisters, all of whom pre-deceased her. She was close to her nieces and nephews and in her last months they were very faithful in visiting her.

Pat was deeply rooted in her faith, in her Irish roots and in her love of New York City the place of her youth. While she was missioned to Michigan and Ohio as a Sister of Mary Reparatrix, she spent most of her long years in SMR serving in New York.

For close to sixty years, Pat managed our New York altar bread department. She loved the ministry, and she enjoyed working with the parish secretaries and priests.

The parish convent of Our Lady of Miraculous Medal in Ridgewood, Queens became the home for many of the Sisters in 1984. Pat was among them, and they all became an integral part of the parish. After thirty years, the sisters moved from that parish convent into the neighboring parish/convent of St. Pancras in Glendale, Queens where Pat lived for the last ten years of her life. While Pat was ill, the clergy and so many parishioners from both parishes visited her and it was fitting that her funeral liturgy was celebrated in the parish where she had indeed been a cheerful giver.

Pat died peacefully early in the morning of December 11, 2024. We trust that ‘All shall be well, and all shall be well…’
