SUMMERTIME

Summertime 1

More than 150 years ago Emilie d’Oultremont-Hooghvorst, foundress of the Sisters of Mary Reparatrix wrote the following sentence. “The presence of God is indeed like a sun of infinite beauty which enlightens our minds, warms our hearts and strengthens our souls, produces joy and life for the growth of the kingdom of God within us.”

In these days of summer in the Northern Hemisphere when we have sunshine in abundance we may find ourselves able to reflect on the image of the sun as the presence of God in our lives. We need the sun to survive ... we need the heat and warmth. A walk through the woods is an easy reminder of how the trees are reaching for the sun – the source of life!

Many of us find it easy to find our Creator God in the beauties of nature or in solitude and quiet. But we are also invited to find God in our everyday lives with its myriad relationships, challenges and tasks.

Summertime 2

In our search a scripture passage that may speak to us is Wisdom 7: 26 “Wisdom is a reflection of the eternal life, untarnished mirror of God’s active power, image of God’s goodness.” In reflecting on this passage renowned author Richard Rohr, OFM says we need to use the lenses of both wisdom and faith in confronting the questions we encounter constantly in our lives. In our limited human vision we never are able to see the whole picture nor to grasp all perspectives of an issue.

  Summertime 3

In these days of summer let us remember to pray for one another as hopefully we have time for both enjoying the beauty of God in creation along with searching for God’s presence in what surrounds us every-day.
